Pawnee County Communities

PAWNEE COUNTY, NEBRASKA, is a great destination for family vacations, weekend getaways, and day trips. It is also perfect for anyone who likes to hunt, fish, tour historical sites and displays, collect antiques, quilt, hike, camp, visit an Amish farm, see beautiful scenery, or just kick back and relax!

Pawnee County people are friendly, and the weather changes often enough to satisfy just about every traveler. Our corner of Nebraska is blessed with rolling hills, lakes, streams, prairies, and plenty of summer sunshine. Spring offers delightful displays of nature’s beauty when the redbud trees and flowering shrubs are in bloom and the first flowers show off their finery. In the fall, the maple trees add brilliant hues of red, gold, and oranges to the landscape.

Where’s Pawnee City?

We’re about an hour southeast of Lincoln, Nebraska, and an hour and a half south of Omaha. There are six communities in Pawnee County. The largest, Pawnee City, is the county seat. To the south is DuBois, with Steinauer and Table Rock to the north. Northeast of Pawnee City are Burchard and Lewiston.

The area features several cafes and restaurants, whether you’re in the mood for a home-cooked meal with all the trimmings, a quick burger and fries, or Mexican dishes. Lodging choices range from comfortable bed-and-breakfast inns to a beautiful hunting lodge. Shoppers will enjoy the variety of stores in the area, including an Amish store, a gift and flower shop, and a well-stocked hardware and variety store.

Attractions

Of course, there are plenty of things to see and do! At the east edge of Pawnee City is the Pawnee City Historical Society Museum, featuring more than 20 buildings and thousands of items on display. Table Rock has a museum that features five buildings and a variety of memorabilia. At Burchard is the Harold Lloyd house, which provides tours by appointment, complete with a showing one of the silent film star’s flicks.

For visitors who enjoy outdoor activities, Burchard Lake, Iron Horse Lake, and several Wildlife Management Areas are sure to satisfy your needs.
