PAWNEE CITY is located approximately 90 miles south of Omaha and 70 miles southeast of Lincoln in a beautiful area that offers views of hills, trees, meadows, farmland, prairies, ponds, lakes, and streams.
The population of Pawnee City (as of 2010) was 878. That makes the community small enough to offer an authentic small-town atmosphere and large enough to provide plenty of amenities to make your stay in the area comfortable and enjoyable.
If you visit Pawnee City in the summer, you’ll enjoy a view of quiet neighborhoods, welcoming front porches, and many homes with beautiful, well-tended landscapes. Around Independence Day, the courthouse lawn is filled with row after row of American flags. It’s quite a sight!
Much of the history of Pawnee City and the surrounding area has been preserved at the Pawnee City Historical Society’s museum on the east edge of town. With more than 20 buildings and thousands of items on display, it’s the perfect destination for history and genealogy buffs. The Pedal Clinic continues the historical tradition in the area with its display of pedal toys and other period playthings.
For active visitors, Pawnee City offers a golf club, a swimming pool, tennis courts, a basketball court, a walking trail, and two parks with playground equipment. Picnic shelters are available in the parks and at the pond, and the Pawnderosa provides a place to park your RV or camper. You can fish at the Pawnderosa fishing pond, hunt in many areas surrounding the town, or enjoy bird watching in several seasons.
If you prefer quieter pursuits, the new library, built in 2011, offers books, movie rentals, computers, and WiFi. The Pawnee County Arts Council sponsors musical performances at various times throughout the year. There are often potluck dinners, ice cream socials, garage sales, auctions, and other activities in the area.
